If you’re preparing for your first few design interviews, I know how it feels. From refreshing my portfolio the night before, wondering whether my projects are “professional enough,” to even Googling every interview question under the sun. Fortunately, I’ve been through a few interviews now, and can share something important:
Most questions are both predictable, and incredibly manageable.
To save the stress, here are 10 common graphic design interview questions you’ll run into, along with where they came from.

1. “Walk me through your portfolio.”

This is the big one. They’re testing your ability to talk about your design process — not just show pretty pictures. Discuss the problem, your decisions, and the results.
2. “What is your design process from start to finish?”
Source: Shillington
Keep this simple: Research → Sketch → Concept → Revise → Deliver.
They’re looking for structure, not perfection.
3. “Why do you want to work here?”

Show that you’ve done your homework. Mention their business, clients, and projects you admire.
4. “How do you handle feedback or criticism?”

This one comes up every time.
They want to know you’re open, collaborative, and willing to revisit your ideas.
5. “Describe a challenging project and how you solved it.”
Source: Indeed
Think of a real experience. Discuss your use of communication, deadlines, or revisions — employers love to see problem-solving in action.
6. “What design tools are you strongest in?”
Source: Indeed
It’s important to be honest, yet confident.
It’s okay if you’re still learning — just show enthusiasm and a desire to learn.
7. “Who or what inspires your design work?”
Source: Coursera
This helps them understand your inspirations. There’s no wrong answer, just explain why.
8. “How do you stay updated with design trends?”
Source: Indeed
Be sure to mention sources, YouTube channels, Behanced, and designers you follow — this demonstrates how you’re plugged into the design world.
9. “Tell us about your favorite project and why it matters to you.”
Source: Shillington
Select something that shows growth.
10. “If you could redesign one of our pieces, what would you improve?”
Source: Coursera
Be respectful, thoughtful, and specific.
This isn’t a trick — they’re evaluating your eye for design, and your ability to communicate.
Conclusion
Interviews don’t test whether you’re a perfect designer, rather they test if you’re thorough, curious, and ready to learn. The more you understand why these questions are asked, the more confidently you can walk into the room and present your work.
